Performing as a one man band for a living

One Man Band - Performing Solo For a Living

If you want more money per gig, then maybe a one man band is the way to go. Since you'll be performing solo there's only one person getting paid. Even if you decided to charge less than a typical band in your area you may still be able to earn 3 or 4 times as much as you'd get as a member of a 4 or 5-piece band. And negotiations are much easier in a one man band situation because there's only your needs to consider.

When I say one man band I don't mean performing vigorously with a tambourine on your ankle, a guitar around your neck and a kazoo sticking out of your butt. Not at all. Get that picture out of your mind. For our concerns this is simply someone (male or female) who performs alone with the aid of midi files or audio backing tracks.

There are many more venues that would do a one man band booking than many musicians are aware of. In fact, some bars and clubs wouldn't be able to offer musical entertainment otherwise. Solo performers practiced in the art of self promotion are able to exploit this need in order to create a demand for their services.

The earning power of an entertainer in a one man band scenario is phenomenal when compared to his/her band counterparts. First of all, there are more gigs available during the course of a day and more gig days available per week than would be for a typical band. Secondly, as discussed before, you'll earn more per gig than you would with a typical band. And most importantly, when performing alone rarely will you not get tips. In fact, if you're a good performer your tips alone will almost always outweigh the pay you would've received as a band member whose band performed the very same gig.
