Backing Tracks
Backing tracks for independent
performance and flexibility
Backing tracks offer help for the solo musician, duo or vocal group. There are 2
kinds of backing tracks; midi and audio. Midi tracks are usually
used in a performance that utilizes midi gear. Audio tracks are
usually used in a performance utilizing simple audio playback
equipment, such as a CD player, cassette player, DAT (Digital Audio
Tape), or MP3 player.
Audio backing tracks, like karaoke songs, will contain music and background
vocals (when applicable) in a final mix. The intent of each type of
track is to compliment a live performance and midi
tracks without a doubt offer the most flexibility.
Midi backing tracks, unlike audio tracks,
won't contain vocals because the
recorded information (midi notes & midi events) are not sounds. It's
digital information that triggers sounds and other digital events from synths, drum machines, and other midi gear.
Each midi instrument, track, note, event, etc. is independent,
allowing you the ability to customize your overall sound and
performance as desired.
If you're working with a cold, audio
backing tracks may allow that cold to cramp your performance. Songs
may be too difficult to sing in the keys you normally sing them in. If you use midi tracks to arrange your midi songs
you'll be able to change the key(s) (without changing the tempo) in
order to sing without strain. This assumes that you're playing through a midi set-up.
Midi backing tracks can be made using various music recording
software. Cubase by Steinberg, Cakewalk Home Studio, and Mark Of The
Unicorn's Digital Performer are just a few. A less time
consuming option is to buy top quality midi tracks and modify them
as you choose. They can be stretched out, shortened or
even arranged into medleys. You can tailor them exactly to your own
performance standards.
Even if you have no musical
equipment but you have a laptop or desktop computer with a good
soundcard, then you're in a good position to utilize the best
audio
& midi
backing tracks for your
performance needs. Just download Song Galaxy's FREE DEMO of their
Midi Editor, purchase a few songs from their selection and have fun.
